Winter Tires: FAQNov 4th, 2015
Driving your BMW shouldn’t feel any different in the winter. BMW Cold Weather Tires are essential to getting the Ultimate Driving Experience throughout the cold season, yet most people have no idea how useful they really are. BMW Cold Weather Tires aren’t just for truck drivers or heavy snow days. In fact, driving through winter on all-season tires without any negative consequence can only be attributed to your good luck.
Let’s start by addressing frequently asked questions and concerns.
Should I change my tires every season?
The tires on your BMW are the most influential factor in road safety- especially at temperatures of 7 degrees Celsius and below. Did you know that the average contact patch (actual rubber making contact with the road’s surface) is approximately the size of the palm of an adult’s hand? This makes it even more important to ensure that whatever is gripping the road is the right compound. BMW Approved Cold Weather Tires are designed to keep you and your passengers safe on wet, icy or snow-covered roads. Our special tread compound helps with gripping the road, improving the handling and the overall performance of your BMW.
To sum it all up, the answer is: yes.
But, my car has traction control!
Winter tires provide your traction control with more grip. Traction control on its own will not provide more grip in slippery weather conditions.
What size tire does my BMW need?
Check the sidewall markings on tires. These markings will inform you of the width, profile and rim size. Keep in mind that each BMW vehicle is unique and there is NO uniform tire size used across the board. If you’re having trouble finding out your tire size, feel free to give BMW Markham a call at 905-477-2212 or email us at BDC@bmwmarkham.com.
What’s the difference between my BMW’s tire size and wheel size?
Your BMW’s wheel size is the diameter of your rim- not including the tire. Your BMW’s wheel size and recommended tire size can be found in the lower section of the b-pillar when you open the driver’s door.
What are BMW Star Approved Tires?
To maintain the highest level of quality, BMW-approved tires are given a star-approval rating (★). The star symbol indicates that the tires have been optimally tuned for each BMW model. In cooperation with the tire manufacturer, each tire is designed and tested to meet BMW’s uncompromising standards for quality, ride comfort, handling and safety. By comparison, a replacement tire that is not BMW-star approved is designed for a wide range of models and various vehicle manufacturers.
And possibly the most frequently asked questions yet…
Are winter tires expensive?

How do I keep my off-season tires safe?
First, we’d recommend that you clean each respective wheel and tire thoroughly. If dirt and dust sit on the wheel or tire for too long, it can be corrosive. Make sure each wheel and tire is completely dry and then vacuum seal each wheel in a bag. Find a cool, dry area to store your tires as tire rubber is extremely sensitive to temperature change. Another thing to keep in mind is: Tires can develop flat spots when they sit on the same spot for too long. For this reason, you should consider mounting your tires or stacking tires up on their sides. Do NOT, under any circumstance, stand tires up on their tread.
I don’t want to deal with all the hassle! Where can I go to store my off-season tires?
Many individuals don’t have the time to properly prepare their wheels and tires for seasonal storage. Other individuals simply don’t have enough space to safely stack the tires. If this sounds like you, we’ve got good news! We are offering tire storage solutions* for $450.00 until November 30, 2015. Call our service department to book an appointment today at 905-477-0822 or email us at BDC@bmwmarkham.com.
*Tire storage includes on and off, storage and a tire balance in Spring and Winter.
So, remember, while all-season tires might do the trick sometimes…only BMW Cold Weather Tires are designed to keep you safe in colder temperatures- through slush, snow and ice. Considering we experience these weather conditions for over three months per year, we’d say BMW Cold Weather Tires are a good investment.
